Navigating Your First Psychology Appointment: An Overview to Demystify the Process
I appreciate that it takes a lot of courage to share with someone your inner world, particularly when you have just met! I consider seeking support one of the most courageous and empowering things one can do. Understandably, for many, this first step can also be an overwhelming and daunting experience. Therefore, I have provided the below summary of what one may expect to demystify the process and help you hopefully feel more at ease for your initial appointment. I have also included some tips to support you in getting the most out of your first session. I have based the following summary on Life Balance Clinical Psychology. Please note, each psychology practice has its processes, and each psychologist has their style. Therefore, your experience may vary. However, I hope the below provides insight to support you during your first steps.
Before the Initial Appointment:
At Life Balance Clinical Psychology, we send a welcome email and paperwork before your initial appointment. If you are attending under a referral from your GP or Psychiatrist, you are welcome to email this in advance to hello@lifebalanceclinicalpsychology.com.au. You are also welcome to bring your referral with you on the day of your appointment.
Arrival:
Upon arriving at the clinic, you'll likely be greeted by our friendly receptionist and advised to sit in the waiting area. Admin will inform me of your arrival, and I will bring you to the consultation room.
The Appointment:
Okay time for the appointment. The appointment will begin by orientating you to the therapeutic space and the assessment process. Psychologists adhere to confidentiality guidelines to create a safe and welcoming environment for therapy. We will discuss the limits of confidentiality, and you will have the opportunity to ask any clarifying questions.
The aim of the appointment is to understand you as a person and to ensure therapy is tailored to your needs. We will discuss what brought you to therapy and assess the current situation. To gain a holisitc understanding of the situation, we will also explore relevant history.
Then, together, we will develop treatment goals and gain a shared understanding of the path we are taking. This is an essential step in creating a personalised treatment plan for you. Whether it's managing a specific condition or seeking personal growth, clarifying your goals will help guide the therapeutic process.
Finally, treatment planning is based on your presenting concerns, therapeutic goals, and a collaborative formulation of the current situation. We will discuss the recommended therapeutic modalities and recommended frequency of sessions. In doing so, we will set the stage for what to expect for your future appointments.
Helpful Tips:
Complete paperwork before your appointment to save time on the day.
If possible, send a copy of your referral before your initial appointment.
Write down a list of key things you would like to report at your initial appointment.
Remember the experience is different for each person. In some cases, the assessment phase may stem beyond the first appointment depending on individual circumstances.
The first appointment is also an opportunity to learn more about your psychologist and their therapeutic style. It's okay if you decide it is not the right therapeutic approach for you.
Feel free to ask questions and share any concerns you have during the appointment. It's important you feel heard.
I hope the above overview provides a bit of insight into what you may expect at your first appointment and demystifies the experience. Remember, the therapeutic journey is unique to each individual, and your psychologist will support you throughout the process.
